Happy Tuesday, Smoky Mountain Lovers!
However, for those who come only and ever to hike the Great Smoky Mountains National Park , you must be told the park is temporarily closed. The government shutdown that began today, October 1, affects all national parks, including our dear Smokies. We really can't even speculate about how the long the park will remain closed, but you can be sure we will let you know once it's open again. By the way, Newfound Gap Road (US 441), which connects Gatlinburg, TN and Cherokee, NC, will remain open, since it's a US Highway. No stopping for pictures/sightseeing will be permitted, though, since the goal is to move traffic through as quickly as possible.
Though this is the first time the whole park has been closed in 17 years, there are plenty of more commonplace occurrences, such as bad weather, that could encourage you to spend more time in your cozy, dry cabin than in the great outdoors. Of course the Game Room of The Gatlinburg Lodge at SmokyMountainViews.com is a top reason guests love this cabin, but here's another: the Upstairs Green Master Suite includes an enormous bathroom where you will find a jetted Jacuzzi, a vanity with two sinks, a sound system you can plug your iPod into, and an electric woodstove/fireplace heater!
